Getting to the sea ice
In order to reach the sea ice - no matter where you are coming from, it is necessary to cross a tide crack. A tide crack forms where the sea ice rises and falls with the ocean tide. The land obviously doesn't move, but the ice does. At high tide, you may not even notice the tide crack, but at low tide it could be up to a metre wide. Here the tide crack is only narrow, but you can look down it and see for metres down! It is ever so slightly unnerving!
