First steps on to the ice

With the colder temperature has also come a strange and exciting natural phenomenon. The freeze-over of the sea. This is commonly known as sea ice. It was deemed to be suitable for walking late april so a few of us headed out to test this novelty out. We have to take a drill to measure the ice thickness at regular intervals, and we also must carry survival gear, ropes and ice axes for safety. It is hard to fathom that this picture is the same spot where only a few short months ago there were barges operating unloading all our supplies when the Amderma was here. UNBELIEVABLE!
